At any given moment, de Sève is juggling multiple projects for clients that range from book and magazine publishers to animation studios, and often he can be found working in his home studio into the wee hours of the morning. He is in high demand because there are few artists who can do what he does: insightful, evocative illustration that achieves its effect without graphic tricks or gimmickry. His approach is unapologetically classical, and it is clear from his work that de Sève relishes, above all else, solid draftsmanship, characterization, and storytelling. He has a keen eye for capturing the mannerisms of characters, both human and animal. The de Sève touch may be no more than a subtle tilt of the head, a quirky off-balance pose, or an exaggeration of a facial feature, but those expressive penwork flourishes are all that is needed. His characters inhabit a world that is believable as our own, yet at the same time out of reach, colored with a natural sense of fun, warmth, and humanity.
